Substitutions and Penalties

Substitution means the temporary replacement of a pairs-partner or team-member who is unable to attend a particular session of an event in which he/she is competing.

A penalty applies if a Tuesday player plays in a Monday or Wednesday event and may apply if a non club-member plays.

Out of Grade Penalties
If a Tuesday player plays in a Monday or Wednesday event he/she will be penalised as follows:

  • in a pairs session: 4%
  • in a teams match: 2 VPs per “out of grade” substitute per match (on a 15-15 VP scale and with a minimum of zero VP overall).

Furthermore, if an out of grade penalty applies in the Ed Hillary teams or the Khandallah teams event, the opposing teams in question will receive a bonus of 1 VP per out of grade substitute (but not more than 25 VPs in total); for these events, two Tuesday players may be substitutes on the same night (being subject to the penalty described above) but may not play as a partnership (i.e. there would have to be two Monday (or Wednesday) -Tuesday pairs).

These penalties are imposed before placings for C points and are effectively handicaps for masterpoint award purposes.

Such a penalty may also be imposed if a player eligible for a Monday / Wednesday event plays with a non club member who, in the opinion of the director or the Club Manager, is a significantly better player than is the norm for the event in question.

With regard to the handicap competition of the Gladys Palmer Teams, if a substitute of a significantly higher standard than the average team member plays a session, the director or Club Manager has discretion to impose a penalty by way of adjusting the handicaps of the two teams playing.

Individual Events
By definition no substitutes are allowed for these events. Out of Grade penalties as above may apply to club members or visitors.

Pairs Events
At least one player of each partnership must play in every session (except in a ten-session event where two sessions may be missed entirely). The partnership for each event must be stated at the first session of play, unless dispensation is sought from and approved by the committee.

To qualify for an event, substitutions for up to 40% of sessions in the event are allowed. In effect, this means:

  • Three or Four Sessions: one substitution
  • Ten Sessions: four substitutions

Out of Grade Penalties as above may apply to club members or visitors.

When one member of each of two pairs requires a substitute, the remaining members of the pairs may play together with each forming a substitute in respect of the other’s pair.

Teams Events
At least one member of the named team has to play in every session of the event. Substitutes from permanent members of other teams are not permitted.

To qualify for an event, substitutions for up to 40% of player-sessions (i.e. number of sessions times 4) in the event are allowed. That is:

  • Four Sessions: six substitutions (= 40% of 16, rounded down)
  • Nine Sessions: 14 substitutions (= 40% of 36, rounded down)

Out of Grade penalties as above may apply to club members or visitors.
Overall
Both names associated with each substitution must be recorded on the travelling score sheet (or equivalent).

No player may be substitute for a player who is also present at the same session.

A player in the process of joining the Club (i.e. one who has his/her nomination form posted on the notice board) may substitute for a member as though he/she were a full member.
